WACEE

The West African Clean Energy & Environment Trade Fair & Conference (WACEE) takes place biennial at the Accra International Conference Centre in Ghana. It is West Africa's major energy and environmental exhibition and conference organized by the Delegation of Germany Industry and Commerce in Ghana (AHK Ghana). WACEE is providing a platform for technology suppliers, investors, industry experts, as well as political and economic decision-makers to ensure a sustainable development of West Africa’s energy and environmental ecosystem.

On the African continent Ghana stands out in regard to political stability, low crime rate and open economy. The West-African nation has emerged as the biggest recipient of foreign investment in west Africa and successfully follows a strategy to become the prime regional hub for services, logistics and manufacturing within the next decade. Stability, solid economic growth, a pipeline of major investment projects and a fertile tech ecosystem support the country’s vision. The country has one of the best integrated infrastructure networks – including railways, highways, ports and air links – in West Africa. Investors recognise this and want to set up a base here before expanding into the rest of the region. Ghana is certainly the gateway to, and a trade hub for, West Africa.

Swiss Ghanian Partnership on Energy Efficiency:

In sub-Saharan Africa, Ghana is Switzerland's most important trade partner and on November 23rd, 2020 Switzerland has signed an agreement with Ghana that will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by contributing to sustainable projects in the African country. The Swiss-Ghana agreement will begin next year to enable the implementation of climate protection projects as part of the "Ghana National Clean Energy Program (NCEP)“. This program is expected to strengthen the expansion of renewable energies and energy-efficient technologies. Read more here. The new partnership will enable the adoption of green and low carbon technology solutions across the country resulting in a plethora of social and environmental benefits. The partnership will catalyse private sector investment into Ghana’s and complementing the Nationally Determined Contributions of Ghana to the Paris Agreement. Ghana is also exploring further projects under the agreement. Read more here

Waste management:

A distinct feature of the waste management sector in Ghana is the strong role of the private sector (companies and informal sector) relative to the role of the public authorities. As result he emphasis is on collection and transport of the waste and less on waste treatment and disposal. There is an exception, plastics and e-waste are addressed by the government directly. In early 2019, the President of Ghana Mr. Akufo-Addo pledged to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa by 2020. Although this has now been rescheduled to  2024, the President is planning to launch a National Sanitation Brigade to speed up the process. He announced that the government will be initiating a National E-waste Program to implement the hazardous and electronic waste control and management act. Collection will start of the advance recycle-eco-fee on all electrical and electronic equipment from all exporting countries. On top of this, a state-of-the-art e-waste recycling facility will be constructed at Agbogbloshie. To facilitate e-waste collection logistics, holding centers in each regional capital and collection centers in each district are to be established. A lot of the actions proposed by the President will partially depend on international cooperation programs. Read more here.

Water management:

As in many Sub-Saharan African countries, drinking water supply and sanitation are major challenges for the Ghanaian authorities and the entire population. The most pressing issues are irregular supply of drinking water, large water loss on the way to the consumer, low water pressure, and very limited access to sewage systems. The Ghanaian government has envisaged a recent Water Sector Strategic Development Plan (WSSDP) Investment of US$ 5,416.48 million. According to WSSDP, the government wants to cover 41.49% of the costs of the state budget and cover 48.98% through loans and grants from developing countries or partners. WACEE aims at providing a platform for technology suppliers, investors, industry experts as well as political and economic decision-makers to ensure a sustainable development of West Africa’s energy and environmental ecosystem.
